Character Name: Nanoha Takamachi
Character Canon: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Character Age/Gender: 25 / Female
Canon Point: Force (manga) chapter 19
Character Canon History: wiki profile
Character Personality: To understand Nanoha thoroughly, one must take all aspects of her life into account. Her home life, her life as a mother figure, as a teacher, and as a peacekeeper. One might just take one look at her and see a strong, willful, stubbornly kind woman, but you would miss the impact of those words by just taking her at face value.

As an instructor, Nanoha exhibits exemplary skills as an air combat mage. Though she had humble beginnings, she has spent more time as a mage in her life than she ever did as a normal girl, and now her job is to pass on the "wisdom and tactics" she learned throughout her life to others. They should not have to face the same mistakes and hardships she has. Overestimating her abilities, acting on her own, being reckless. These are all traits she dislikes in others, and her training is set up to discourage this behavior. Just because she knows people have to go all-out sometimes, there are times and places for such gusto. Mock battles are meant to showcase good strategies and test the limits of one's ability to think on the fly. They are not meant to break those limits and seek to land the finishing blow on the opposition at all costs. Nanoha will step in to prevent such an event from happening, just as she did with her reckless Forwards, Subaru and Teana. To the surprise of others, she acted rather ruthlessly when she bound Subaru and made her watch as she knocked Teana out, stating she should "cool her head". This behavior earned Subaru's ire -- a girl who, above all else, admired Nanoha and idolized the strength that she displayed ever since she was rescued as a child. But both she and Teana were made to understand why she had acted so coldly, and in the end they themselves learned the lesson that might not have made it through their stubborn heads any other way. It takes one to know one, after all.

When it comes to the idiom "I'm a lover; not a fighter", you could say that Nanoha is both of these things. She is not above using every tool in her arsenal to resolve a conflict. The first option she chooses, however, is to try and talk things out. Though she attempts to negotiate first, Vita has likened her attitude and habit of doing so while in full battle regalia to the punchline of a Belkan joke: "If you're an emissary of peace, don't carry a spear." One cannot blame her, when her opponents all tend to attack first without any explanations as to what they have planned. If talking will not work, she will do everything she can do disable or otherwise incapacitate her "enemy" so that she may THEN talk to them on even terms. No weapons. No fighting. She just wants to understand others. Nanoha genuinely wants to know what makes those who lash out this way tick. How can she attempt this if they will not communicate with her? If the lines of communication have to be laid out with brute force, then so be it. Her motives can be considered selfish as well, in that she wants to understand others whether they, themselves, wish to be understood or not. There are also the rare moments in which she gets overly emotional, triggered by harm coming to those around her. If there is ever a button one could push to bring out the "white devil" in Nanoha, it would be going after her loved ones. It is a good thing that her particular brand of magic is non-lethal in nature. It will hurt like hell! But whoever invokes her wrath WILL survive past it.

These are often the first impressions one might have from Nanoha's world, if all they do is keep up with her TSAB accomplishments, as well as her reputation and rumors surrounding her battle records. Shedding her armor, Nanoha is a woman that has very simple desires. To live peacefully with her adopted daughter Vivio (and Vivio's other guardian, Fate), is one of her goals. She wants others to be able to live out their lives without strife, as well, which is why she will not hesitate to protect those she loves and cares for. Nanoha is quite down-to-earth, when you consider how she acts when she's not on duty. Her students had once gone along on a mission to Earth — in Nanoha's home city, of all places. There, they discovered that she acted around her true family and old childhood friends as if she belonged there the whole time. It shows that she has not strayed too far from her humble roots, despite the change of scenery and her reputation within the Bureau. Nanoha is far from conceited in this regard. She even wields a subtle sense of humor, and she is rather thick-skinned when it comes to taking teasing from her friends and family. At the same time, she is not one to judge or mock others, or make light of their plights.

One could look at all of this and say that Nanoha is almost super-human. She is beautiful, intelligent, wise, powerful, and has plenty of domestic prowess. Nanoha is able to instantly switch between the roles of a teacher, warrior, mother, or friend as the situation calls for. However, this behavior is not without its drawbacks. While Vivio points out that Fate is Nanoha's "close person", and she will admit to having close friends, it appears as if she keeps nearly everyone in the same bubble. Being in the lead as she so often is, it puts her in a risky position more often than not. It is not that she is fearless; but rather that she bets everything on overcoming those same hardships. Most who know of her place her on a pedestal. It is a lot of pressure to live up to those standards, and to perform flawlessly. She is the common link between so many people. If something were to happen to her it would be devastating, so she pushes herself to prevent that from happening. It results in breaking her own limits to the same reckless degree she chides others for displaying, putting a strain on both her mind and her body. Her stubborn pride is just as much her biggest asset as it might be her eventual downfall.

AU Information: Nanoha is coming from a previous setting, [community profile] mayfield_rpg. She had only spent four months in that city, but there was much she discovered of other people and the cruel reality of that 50's-styled city. During her time there she had come to learn of many concepts unique to that environment, such as characters being droned, multiple copies existing in succession with no memory of one another. Her "family" had been present -- her long-time friend Hayate, partner Fate, and her-and-Fate's adoptive daughter Vivio. They had told her that Nanoha had lived once in the city prior, but she of course had no memory of this herself. That was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to Mayfield's harsh mind-games. The incidents in the town that happened intermittently seemed to serve no other purpose but to test the residents at best, and at worse submit them to distressing amounts of physical and psychological torture.

There is not much of a change to Nanoha's personality because of this, but she was in her "work mode" when she had been taken away. She and her colleagues had just completed investigating a carnival which seemed to have reality crumbling down around it, and on her own she had investigated the limits of the borders of where the town loops in upon itself, to little avail. Nanoha gathered several residents who had fresh perspectives of Mayfield, unique personal experiences, and information gathered over their long months in the setting. Before she could get the meeting of the minds properly underway, she was droned (dropped) with any resolution.

Character Abilities: Spell List
Character Inventory: Nanoha will arrive in a 1950's dress from Mayfield, and in her possession will be the Intelligent Device Raising Heart. RH allows her better control over her innate magical powers, as well as access to the equipment detailed in the previous link, her Barrier Jacket and Staff (held in Hammerspace). She never regained her Anti-Eclipse weaponry, so you can ignore anything pertaining to the Fortress weapon's platform or the Strike Cannon. She is slightly less Gundam now. Slightly.

[Introspection]:
A vacation? Nanoha thought to herself.

"It sounds like you had a hard time in that other place, so just think of this place as a vacation," someone had suggested. Whomever said it must have meant well, and the woman understood that, but in the end when she was alone with her thoughts the idea weighed heavily upon her mind.

She can't relax. As far as she knew, her family was still stuck back there in that terrible city of Mayfield. Her old friends and new allies, still resisting the cruel influence and seemingly insurmountable turmoil inflicted upon them and the other residents week after week. One could say that Saeng Seong is quite the opposite. It does not present the quaint, idyllic image that Mayfield had, and the motives of those who control their fate here in this new place do not appear malevolent. On the surface, at least.

The "sickness" that can affect those who do not comply still bothers her. They seem like withdrawal symptoms, but withdrawal from what, precisely? Are all the food sources here drugged? The water? Is there magic involved that Raising Heart cannot analyze? There are still too many unknown variables here and too many loose ends left back in Mayfield for Nanoha to ever truly relax.

One wouldn't be able to tell on a day-to-day basis, though, that anything was bothering her at all. Nanoha has a masterful poker-face. She knows that if she showed herself as frail, weak and worried, that others might lose confidence as a result, and she refuses to drag anyone else down because of her own doubts. It is a quiet sort of depression; locked within the gates of her heart, only set free when she was alone with her thoughts, and while she formulated a strategy. This place was good at lulling others into a false sense of security, and her survival instinct was not constantly active, keeping her in a high state of alert, but that did not mean she would be complacent forever. She would be strong, she would find a way out, and she would see everyone return home one day.
